Fairmont picks concrete for four new pickleball courts at soccer complex

TLDR: The Fairmont City Council voted unanimously Monday to use post-tension concrete as the base for four new pickleball courts planned at the Fairmont Soccer Complex.

Fairmont SentinelPickleball court material picked

Public Works Director Matthew York said each court will have an acrylic overlay, and the council needed to choose the material underneath before the city can put the project out to bid. Post-tension concrete was estimated at $340,000 for the project, compared with $280,000 for asphalt.

York said asphalt has a lifespan of 15 to 20 years and post-tension concrete 30 to 40 years. "It's a little bit more money now, but over the course of the lifespan of the courts, it should be less expensive in concrete than it is in asphalt," York said. City Engineer Troy Nemmers said both surfaces would crack, but post-tension concrete would hold cracks tight so water can't get in.

York said the project includes vegetative screening, light prep, benches and other small amenities, and Nemmers said it also covers fencing, sidewalks and landscaping. York said the city is planning space for an additional four courts.

York said the project budget is $191,000 and has not yet been increased. He said that once a material was chosen, staff could adjust the draft budget and look for additional funds. The city will go out for bids on the project.
